Known as Houston’s Central Park, the 12 acre Discovery Green first opened exactly one year ago today. The property is constantly alive with events, performances and workshops for Houston patrons. Naturally, the landscaping is beautiful and features a lake with water gardens, a model boat area, and a shallow pool designed for remote-controlled watercrafts. During Houston’s “winterâ€, Discovery Green hosts outdoor ice skating with the Holiday Skating on the Lake series. As an additional perk, the park is decorated with breath taking themed gardens that include areas specifically dedicated to native Texas plants and birds and butterflies of the coastal region.
Other park attractions include the John P. McGovern playground which is carved into an existing, tree-shaded hill designed to shield tots from street traffic, the Simmons Family Stage and Stedman West Veranda, which is perfect for parties and performances, the Gateway Fountain which features 14 ft. high arching jets, an amphitheater, dog runs, jogging trails, and reading rooms presented by the City of Houston Library called HPL Express which simultaneously provide free wireless.
Visitors also have the choice of noshing at hot dining spots; the rooftop bar and restaurant, The Grove, The Treehouse or The Lake House. For more info, contact (The Grove; 713-337-7321; www.thegrovehouston.com) or (The Lake House; 713-337-7320; www.thelakehousehouston.com)
The best part of Discovery Green, (besides its enthusiasm for conservation and general beauty), is the enormous menu of events it presents each day. Below are the contents for the month of April. Visit www.discoverygreen.com for more information.

Celebrate the arrival of spring at the Wine Room at ONE, this Tuesday, April 7th. Our focus will be on lighter wines as we move to warmer temperatures in Houston. Parking is available at the surface parking lot, one block north at Main @ Capitol.
The 18 Hands Gallery in the Heights has a fantastic collection of clay and ceramic works. 18 Hands Gallery was created with the goal of bringing together the unique work of many fine clay artists in an accessible and inviting way. In addition to the work of its founding principals, the gallery represents the work of many other area artists. The gallery has monthly exhibitions, feature shows by well-known or emerging guest artists, as well as ceramic artists’ lectures and workshops.
The next 18 Hands Gallery show is called “Clay Across Texas Series: San Antonio.” The show features work of San Antonio artisans Stewart Martin, Linda Nowell, and Susan Raine. It also includes new work by the 18 Hands Gallery Artists. The opening is April 4, 2009, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. The show runs from April 4 to April 25.
Visit the 18 Hands Gallery at 249B West 19th Street, Houston, Texas 77008. The Gallery’s hours are 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Wednesday through Saturday and Sunday noon til 5:00 PM. To reach 18 Hands by phone, dial 713.869.3099.
The Children’s Museum in Houston has just finished a huge renovation. It’s a whole new experience. The new museum is fantastic. Run, don’t walk, and take your kids to see the newly renovated Houston Children’s Museum.
Tonight at exactly 8:30p.m., lights around the world will be quickly dimmed. The brilliant theory behind Earth Hour supported by the World Wildlife Fund is prioritizing global action and sparking an immediate reaction. Lights in 2,400 cities and more than 82 countries will be turned off, including international landmarks like The Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building and The Sydney Opera House. Be sure to participate in this once a year event and do the Earth some justice.
Stop by Momentum Audi (2315 Richmond Ave. at Kirby) this evening from 7pm-9pm for a night of fun and fashion amongst fast cars hosted by Houston Modern Luxury mag. The night includes a Spring Fashion Show presented by Neiman Marcus and Paige Parks models which begins at 8pm sharp. DJ Sun will be spinning, the cocktails will be flowing loosely (or so we hope), and the valet is complimentary. Be sure to RSVP with rsvp@modernluxury.com.
Perhaps the only time Texans actually live up to our infamous media driven stereotype portrayal of Stetson-in-hand, boot-wearing, horse lassoing selves is during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Events begin with the traditional Downtown Rodeo Parade and Bar-b-que cook off involving dry rub and carnivores of grand proportions. During the actual rodeo, patrons can enjoy petting zoos, bull riding, horse roping, pig races…you get it. The actual concert series, this year graced with the presence of teen idols Taylor Swift and The Jonas Brothers (fondly referred to as the Jo Bros), also draws quite a bit of attention and screaming adolescent fans (see concert listings below for more info). Get ready for quite a kick!
