Discovery Green Houston

Known as Houston’s Central Park, the 12 acre Discovery Green first opened exactly one year ago today. The property is constantly alive with events, performances and workshops for Houston patrons. Naturally, the landscaping is beautiful and features a lake with water gardens, a model boat area, and a shallow pool designed for remote-controlled watercrafts. During Houston’s “winter”, Discovery Green hosts outdoor ice skating with the Holiday Skating on the Lake series. As an additional perk, the park is decorated with breath taking themed gardens that include areas specifically dedicated to native Texas plants and birds and butterflies of the coastal region.

Other park attractions include the John P. McGovern playground which is carved into an existing, tree-shaded hill designed to shield tots from street traffic, the Simmons Family Stage and Stedman West Veranda, which is perfect for parties and performances, the Gateway Fountain which features 14 ft. high arching jets, an amphitheater, dog runs, jogging trails, and reading rooms presented by the City of Houston Library called HPL Express which simultaneously provide free wireless.

Visitors also have the choice of noshing at hot dining spots; the rooftop bar and restaurant, The Grove, The Treehouse or The Lake House. For more info, contact (The Grove; 713-337-7321; www.thegrovehouston.com) or (The Lake House; 713-337-7320; www.thelakehousehouston.com)

The best part of Discovery Green, (besides its enthusiasm for conservation and general beauty), is the enormous menu of events it presents each day. Below are the contents for the month of April. Visit www.discoverygreen.com for more information.
